Mortgage Hardship

Repayment Plans

Your servicer may allow you to catch up by spreading missed payments over several months in addition to your regular payment.

Forbearance

A temporary pause or reduction in your mortgage payments. When forbearance ends, you'll need to repay the missed amounts โ€” options may include a repayment plan, loan modification, or payment deferral.

Loan Modification

A permanent change to your loan terms to make payments more affordable โ€” may involve extending the term, reducing the interest rate, or adding missed payments to the balance.

Payment Deferral

Some servicers allow you to move missed payments to the end of your loan without changing your current monthly payment.

Partial Claim Programs

For FHA-insured loans, a second loan from HUD may cover missed payments. Available only where applicable.

Refinance Options

Replacing your current mortgage with a new one may reduce your monthly payment if you qualify. This depends on interest rates, credit, equity, and lender requirements.

Servicer Hardship Programs

Many mortgage companies have their own hardship assistance programs. Contact your servicer directly to ask what options are available to you.

Availability depends on your specific mortgage, servicer, investor, eligibility rules, and applicable law. Contact your servicer to discuss options.
